SEARCHING PAST NURSING BLOGS

This is an FYI post for all of you visitors to this blog. You are able to easily subject search all of the past nursing blogs (links on the right) by using the blog search box found at the top of each blog. Type in a key word ex. "PDA" and it will bring up every post that has this key word mentioned in the title or anywhere in the body of every past post from the creation of the blog. You type this same word into each and every past nursing blog to find all of the jewels that have been posted by all of the previous nursing classes. Remember that we have all "been there and done that" before you and have much to offer to help you in your nursing journey.

Examples of good key words are, N7 exam, practice questions, cardiac, respiratory, ABG, EKG, SNA, NCLEX, help, video, etc.

Another way to look for help for your current classes is to search the previous blogs by the same semester that you are in. For example, if you are currently in N7 and are looking for all of the help you can get, search the archives of the previous blogs during their third semester. Look at the time that they were pinned and count backward by the month, or count forward from the time they started the program. If you for example are in your 3rd semester 2nd month, which happens to be Feb or Sept (depending on wether you are to pinned in the spring or fall), look in the previous blogs under these same months and you will see their posts looking as if they are in your class right now. It is a great help to use all of the helps that are out there for you. Why re-invent the wheel?

Goodbye Chris Erly

Chris Erly was a nursing student who was a couple of semesters ahead of our class. Much of the helpful information that I was posting on our blog and passing around to help us get through N4 and beyond, came from him. I heard that he was quite the character and loved to stir things up while he was going through Delta's ADN program. After graduation, he took on a job as an ER nurse in Sacramento. He passed away on January 8, 2008.

Here is a little something to show you all how far nursing and the nurse's role has come. My Aunt Bonnie took her CA State Nursing Boards on Aug 23-24, 1966. She was a graduate of Mt San Antonio College. This is an excerpt from her nursing book.

Serious Reader Note:
Nursing is a very demanding profession. To start with, nurses must learn everything a doctor learns, so that whenever a situation arises that might develop into a mistake on the part of the doctor if the nurse did what the doctor ordered instead of what he meant to do, the nurse can distinguish the latter from the former and prevent the mistake from occuring. Then nurses must learn how to use this knowledge so that neither the doctor nor the patient is aware they possess it, for in the former instance, it might cause the patient to lose confidence in the doctor, and in the latter, it might cause the doctor to lose confidence in himself. Finally, if, despite a nurse's best efforts, things are not going well between doctor and patient, and the nurse can't patch it up, the nurse must take the blame.
Nurses are very patient. They realize their reward will not be in this lifetime, for to receive even a fraction of the recognition they deserve would be to lessen the importance of the doctor. Nurses often believe in reincarnation.

So there you have it, the 1960's view of nursing. Boy have we come a long way from that thinking!

I am at Lodi Memorial Hospital. I am just about to finish their awesome 18 week new grad Versant program. I am now working night shift in the ICU department and loving it. There are 14 from our grad class with me.

I took the NCLEX last Tuesday and found out Friday morning that I passed! What a huge relief...I don't know how the nurses who took the paper and pencil test years ago survived (it used to take 2 months for them to get their results)....I could barely make it through those three days! Even though I took Kaplan and used the Saunders book to prepare, I still walked out of that test feeling my results could have gone either way....but, it's over now and I've already started packing up my study space and even sold some of my books on Amazon. I start tomorrow at Lodi in their Versant program and will work right into their OB department. Good luck to all those out there still studying for the NCLEX!

I woke up at 5:30 this morning and was unable to go back to sleep, so I checked the BRN and there it was...I passed! I am so excited. I must say, I took NO courses, but I did spend the best $39.95 of my life on the Learning Extension course that Caralee mentioned. It gave out 1000+ questions and trained your brain to go from subject to subject. The questions were written identically and by doing ALL of the questions I had a good feeling of what the NCLEX was looking for. Without it, I don't know that I would have felt as confident when I walked out of the exam. I got 75 questions and I new for certainty that the last one was correct...that helped me get through the 3 days of waiting for results. As I mentioned, I really felt good about it after the test, but was afraid to feel TOO confident...Good Luck to you all! It's a fabulous feeling to see those two tiny letters after your name and I know you will all enjoy the feeling as I did.

N-CLEX Results

So, perhaps I'm the only one in the dark, but where do we see the results posted? Everything I read is about how to apply for the exam, or what to do if you need to retake the test, but I see nothing about the actual results. Are they simply emailed to you, or sent in the mail? I tried looking on the BRN website, but I'm not sure where to find them, other than to do a license check as if I was applying for a job...can someone please direct me? Thanks :)

Took my boards & have results!

Ok, I took my boards on Tues & got the results on Fri. I passed! I have heard that it can take longer to get the results, so try to be patient.
I didn't get any time to study. We are buying a new home & selling ours. I am also starting the RN to BSN program at Sac State, so with work & kids there didn't seem to ever be time to study. Honestly, I don't know how much studying would have helped. The test was so different from what I expected that I don't know how you could study for it. After two years of the RN program, you know what you know.
My test shut off at 75 questions, & I didn't feel like I had answered enough right to have passed so soon. The more I thought about it, the more I was certain that I had failed. All I could remember were the questions that I thought I had gotten wrong.
So, the moral of the story is not to worry!!! You will probably walk away feeling pretty uncomfortable. The wait will seem like forever, but it will come.

NCLEX exam results

Hi everyone! For those of you like me who've already taken the exam, and those who will be this is for information so you won't freak out. Kimberly Duntsch and I have already taken our boards and couldn't figure out why our results haven't been posted yet. It normally takes 48-72hrs. Kim contacted Mary Neville and we found out that our official transcripts just arrived to the BRN last week. We were told that it can take a couple of weeks to process-2-3weeks, and anyone who has taken their boards will not see their results posted until this paperwork has been processed-SO DON'T THINK YOU FAILED! The BRN is extremely slow. It is taking forever for some people to even receive their IPs....Good luck to all-I hope this is helpful!

I am still waiting to hear from the State (since my speech teacher didn't post my grade until 2 weeks into Jan which means that I will probably be one of the last ones who gets to take the NCLEX), so I was wondering who has taken their test already and what was it like.
I would love to hear all about it and I know that others would too. Here is a sampling of questions that inquiring minds would love to ask.

When did you take your test?
What testing facility did you use?
How soon did you know if you passed?
Did you take an NCLEX prep course?
How was the testing environment? (noisy, cold, warm, distracting, perfect, crowded, etc.)
What made you feel comfortable and confident?
Which preparation strategies worked for you and which ones did not?
What made you feel nervous?
Was there anything really surprising or unexpected?
How many questions did you get? (optional)
How do all of the practice test formats that we have used throughout the program compare with the actual test?
How were the breaks?
Were you able to get a snack or a drink?
Were you allowed to bring anything inside, like a purse, car keys, cell phone, etc?
What did you do the night before?
What did you do after the test (go home and cry from stress relief, party, go on vacation, kick the cat, make contact with family members for the first time in 2 years)?
If you could do anything over again, or prepare in a different way, what would it be?

I want to say thanks for the thoughts, well wishes and prayers. Other than using occasional eye drops and needing to get my contact lens and glasses prescriptions changed the first of January, I am back in the seeing world and am very grateful for it.

I just wanted to take a moment now to thank the people responsible for making this blog happen...especially Bonnie and Debbie. It has been an invaluable tool for test preparation and keeping in touch with everyone. I can only guess at the amount of time that you two put into making this a reality for our 12/06 nursing students; is there a plan to keep it going after pinning? Only 3 more days until we're not "student nurses" anymore...congratulations to everyone!

PINNING CEREMONY

Ceremony: Atherton Auditorium Thursday, 12-21-06 at 7:00 pm
Plan to be in the green room no later than 6:30 pm
Balloons will not be allowed in the auditorium
Please notify me ASAP if you have family member that will require wheelchair seating

Practice: Thursday, December 21, 2006 from 1pm to 3pm in Atherton Auditorium
Only students and staff will be allowed in the Auditorium during practice. Please do not bring family, friends or children to the practice.
**Practice is mandatory. If you have an overwhelming reason to miss it,
notify Ms. Neville or Ms. Batson as soon as possible.**
Please do not bring food or drink in to the Auditorium.

Caps: Caps must be worn be the female graduates to participate in the ceremony.
Your hair needs to be up or pulled back if it extends beyond the shoulders.
Cost for caps is about $15.00 each, payable in cash to Ms. Neville. Caps should be
available the first week of December - Men do not wear caps

Pins: Please pay for pins at the Bookstore. The cost will be approximately $70.00. I
will notify you when you can go over and pay for your pin. Turn in a copy of your
receipt to the Nursing Office - Students are NOT required to purchase a pin

Dress: White uniforms and white nursing shoes for the ladies. Men may wear white
slacks and a white shirt, jacket or uniform top and black belt, white nursing shoes.
Please remember, bright lights make your white uniforms very transparent, so
wear a slip and light under clothing

Program: You will be responsible to make sure that your name is spelled correctly and
included in the program. I will distribute a copy before the program goes to print.

Invitations: Each student will receive 10 invitations and 10 envelopes at no charge. Invitations
are NOT needed to get into the ceremony; entrance is first come, first served (NO
TICKETS required)

Decorations: Each student should bring a 6 inch pot with poinsettia

Music: Music choices should be submitted to Ms. Neville or Ms. Batson as soon as
possible

Slide show: It is the student’s responsibility to provide the photos and produce the slide
show. Please have the PowerPoint show ready at least one week prior to the
event

Questions: Questions should be directed to Ms. Neville or Ms. Batson to receive accurate

N8 Final Review

The ATI will be on Tues Locke 313 at 1100. The N8 Final will follow. Then the theory and clinical evaluations are to be turned in.

The ATI results are usually back within 24 hours up to 2 days max. We have to score at least a 40^th percentile in the program or retake the home version and score at least an 85% before our pinning and before we can get a grade. Recommends taking the ATI and then going home and taking the unsecured version just in case. Cannot be taken ahead because it is timed.

The Final will worth 50 points.
Test only covers complications covered in the last 2 lectures.
It will contain multiple multiples and not a lot of writing. It is one of the shorter tests and is usually finished in an hour or less.

Here is the final review typed from a recording. It is not necessarily in the order given but is grouped by subject. I will post the answers with the page numbers in the comments soon. Please contribute your findings and thoughts

Will more or less insulin be needed if insulin dependent as the pregnancy progresses?

Know if it is getting worse.
Know what normal edema is and what is not.

What is its primary focus, why is it given?
It does have other side effects that help, but what is the primary reason that MgSo4 is given in the hospital setting?
Review assessments and interventions.
How often do you do reflex checks?
How often do you do urine checks and what should the urine be?
How often would you check MgSo4 levels?
What drug do you give if there is MgSO4 toxicity?
If a PIH mom has a seizure and there is ROM and meconium, know why this happened.

What do you do with a woman in labor, which the fetal baseline goes down and you have persistent late decelerations?
What are all of things that you do like turn them on their side; give them O2, bolus and all that stuff.
If this happens with a woman who has PIH, would these same things done?
Do you turn her on her side; give O2 and a fluid bolus?
Is there anything different in the way that you treat her?
What is the cause of PIH?
Does it usually reoccur?

What are the complications that a baby would have if they were IUGR (a small baby)?
What kind of problems would they have?

What do you have to do before increasing the dose of pitocin for a woman who is being induced for labor?

Does pitocin need to be run through a pump or can it be free flowing?
When should you discontinue pitocin?
Under what criteria?
What might be going on with the mom that you would stop it?

How do you diagnose if somebody is really in preterm labor?
How do you know, what is happening with her that makes you think that she really is in labor that early?

Hi Everyone! There is an online review for those of you who are like me and can't sit for 8 hrs a day/4 days+ for a weeklong seminar....Sac State uses this review and it's online or live on January 8th. It's called Hurst Review and if you do it online it's $300 and you have access to all her notes for all systems (over 200+ pages of review) it's located on WWW.HURSTREVIEW.COM, and I just finished printing out all my info. It includes written material that is simplified so you get it and that you fill in yourself as you listen to her live feeds that go over everything. I know of 6 different people who have used this for both the live review and just the online review and they've all passed the NCLEX no problem! Just thought I would pass this along...wish we had all this simplified info way back.

N9 Midterm Review Notes

There are some things that you are just going to have to recognize verbatim other things you will get right by an overall general understanding of the concept. Heaviest in chaps 1-5, if she mentions it in the pretest review, make sure that you go over everything that is mentioned. Just follow what she tells you. You can learn most of what you need from the boxes and tables. Doing the 2 ATI practice tests really helps with the overall concepts.
Here are some notes mainly from Debbie which she typed up before the test. You can use these as a base and add your own to them. These notes were made blind before the test and have not been added to with any post test info.

Alternative Nursing Pins

Nursing Review Update

OK, Delayne is FedExing the 28 paid registrations today. We have over 40 on our list of those wanting to go. I talked to Sally on the phone today and she said that she reserved 40 spots for our group. So she will do a special conditional extention for those who missed the boat of the 9th deadline.
For those who still want to go, you have to mail your money and Registration to the address on the form. You need to write in SJDCs name for the school, and write somewhere on the form that you want to be added to Delayne Sittig's or Bonnie Boss's group and then you will still be able to get the $200.00 price. It has to be postmarked no later than the 14th of November or you will be out of luck!
For those of you who have already paid, a registration confirmation and map will be mailed out to you on December 5th, to the address that you entered on the form.

Got or Want Roommates?

Who all are looking for bunkmates to share the costs of the rooms in San Francisco? Please post here with you name so we can start matching up. Some of the rooms can sleep 3-6 (or more if we pack in, sleep on the floor and put a porta potty in the closet)
I will keep updating this post till the time of the nursing review, so keep checking back. When you find all of your roommates, post again to let us know who still needs to find some buddies.
Don't wait too long because the rooms may fill up. We are not the only nursing school that will be attending.
If anyone lives within a reasonable distance from the SF college, are you willing to have any of your classmates have a slumber party at your house?
Does anyone know if there is an RV park nearby or a Walmart parking lot for those of us who have RVs? We could pack in those too. January is an off season.
If anyone wants to commute everyday (God bless you), maybe you could pair up with others of the same frame of mind to share the cost of the gas.

We need to have all of the money collected by the 9th. Please get your $200 check or MO made out to the 'Nursing Review' and the filled out registration form to Delayne or Myself ASAP. You can drop your forms and payments sealed in an envelope with my name on it, in the nursing office too. The form can be downloaded from a previous post. (scroll down).
If you are having difficulties please send us an email or call me (209)329-1369. We will be FedExing them all at the same time. It is still possible to pay later and go with us in January(provided space available), but you will not get this discounted pre-reserved group rate. This is less than half of the Kaplan price. Nursing grads from previous semesters who have taken this course before the NCLEX said that it was just about identical and their methods really helped with recall and choosing the right answers. They said that they really nailed it at the review (per Mrs. Batson).

LMH Goes Paperless!

Hey you guys, I guess we are the first OB clinical group to go paperless. So here we all are learning how to do all of our charting on the computer.

Hold that baby, we have to chart our assessment first!

LMH has computers everywhere outside of the rooms and in the halls. They are called COWS which stands for computers on wheels. Everyone will now have legible handwriting and get their charting done on time (Ha, Ha) providing that you can figure out where each of charting components go.

Bet you can't find any stress in this hospital!

She and various other nursing educators will be presenting a Nursing Review 4 day, 30 hour course on January 9, 10, 11 and 12, 2007, which will be hosted by SFSU Nursing in Knuth Hall SFSU. There is nearby motel/Inn discounts for nursing students if you tell them you are attending the Nursing Review.
M. Lagerquist went on in great detail about the 99% passing success rate of this course and the various unique and funny styles used by the nursing educators to get the info across to us and into our (sometimes stubborn) heads. Hey all you 2nd rotation OB peeps....greetings and good luck in N8! The theory lecture goes verbatim with the syllabus so you don't have to take class notes from stratch (yeah!). Ms. Batson's tests are not just all multiple choice. There are a lot of fill-in and short answer questions; know your interventions and rationales (as always!). The third test was the hardest and longest because it had the most writing involved. There's a lot of busy work in clinical but the 3 most time-consuming things are: 1) drug worksheet that has to be filled out before your first clinical day, 2) the neonatal theory worksheet (what's normal in a head-to-toe newborn assessment v. what's not normal)...this has to be filled out before your assigned day in the nursery and 3) the oral presentation (because you have to include recent/pertinent research related to your topic). If anyone has any questions, post them on the blog....have fun!
