more nursing 5 info. from K.Ippolito

Hello again,

I seem to have omitted part of my welcome message, so here goes -
it should answer the questions I have received regarding the Julien text:

  • 1. Clinical groups will not start until August 30 for Tues/Wed groups and September 1 for Thurs/Fri groups.
  • N5 has a clinical rotation of 6 weeks rather than 9 weeks.
  • You will be wearing regular professional/business type clothes for clinical - no uniforms.
  • Clothing items NOT allowed in the clinical area include: Tee Shirts, jeans, open-toed shoes, anything provocative, low cut, too tight etc. As always, no perfume, dangling earrings or excessive jewelry. A single pair of post earrings is allowed - no other visible piercings. Also, no visible tatoos are allowed.
  • 2. The Instructional Materials (aka Syllabus) are not in the bookstore, but will be available to you online - stay tuned for details.
  • 3. The textbooks are:Required:Varcarolis, E. (2002). Foundations of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing: A Clinical Approach (4th Ed)
  • Recommended:
  • 1. Quick Reference to the Diagnostic Criteria from DSM-IV-TRby American Psychiatric AssociationPublisher: American Psychiatric Association; 1st edition (July, 2000) ISBN: 0890420262
  • 2. Julien, R. (2001). A primer of drug action. (10th Ed.). New York: Worth3. Townsend, M. (2003). Nursing diagnoses in psychiatric nursing: Care plans and psychotropic medications. (6th Ed.). Philadelphia: F. A. Davis.
  • I understand that the recommended texts are not in the bookstore so I will need to check on this. Julien is an great reference, but of course as it is only recommended, you will not be tested on it. In lieu of the Julien readings, you may refer to your pharmacology text regarding the general attributes of psychiatric medications. More later on this.
  • I am looking forward to meeting you all and having a great learning experience in mental health!

Sincerely,Karen Ippolito
