Maybe your Pt doesn't want a transfusion. Here are some alternatives.

Prevent Excessive Blood Loss

Mechanical options
Diathermy (cauterization)
Laser technology

Pharmacological options
Antifibrinolytics ( promote clot stability)
Fibrin sealant (topical)
Hematinics - oral iron therapy and vit. C (raise hemoglobin levels)
Recombinant human erythropoietin ( stims bone marrow to make RBCs)

Re-use Own blood
Autologous transfusions (own blood prestored)
Cell salvage (own blood, salvaged-cleaned-reinfused from surgery)

Plasma Expanders
Colloids- pull fluid from interstitial spaces (dextran)
Crystalloids- 1st choice- help prevent hypovolemia (Dextrose in water, Saline, dextrose in saline, Ringer's, lactated Ringer's)

Artificial Blood
