- 1960s – NPs appeared in response to a limited supply of physicians
- APNs most often provide primary care, Dx and Tx common diseases and injuries
- They prescribe medications in all states and Canada
- 1990s – State laws allowed prescriptive authority and third party billing, (BTW, PAs do not have this authority) which allow NPs to set up private practice which parallel primary care physicians.
